Bangladesh in Turmoil: Army Chief to Meet Student Protest Leaders Amid Political Crisis

Bangladesh faces a critical juncture as the nation's army chief prepares to meet student protest leaders following the resignation and flight of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Schools in Dhaka have reopened with sparse attendance after months of anti-quota protests boiled over into violent unrest, claiming approximately 300 lives and injuring thousands more.

Garment factories, significant for Bangladesh's economy, will remain closed on Tuesday, with reopening plans to be announced soon, according to the main garment manufacturers association. The student leaders are calling for a new interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, who has tentatively agreed to assume the role of chief adviser.

Yunus, speaking from Paris, expressed anger towards India for sheltering Hasina. Reports indicate that Hasina landed at a military airfield in Hindon, near Delhi. Meanwhile, the Bangladesh army chief is set to meet protest leaders while an interim government plans fresh elections, and the release of opposition leader Khaleda Zia has been promised.
