Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's attempt to travel to London has encountered complications, as the UK appears unwilling to offer her refuge. Consequently, she is expected to remain in India for the foreseeable future, people familiar with the matter confirmed on Tuesday.
Sheikh Hasina, who arrived at Hindon airbase on Monday in a C-130J military aircraft shortly after her resignation, has been moved to an undisclosed location in Delhi under tight security. Accompanied by her sister Sheikh Rehana, Hasina had planned to head to London from India to seek temporary asylum. However, the UK government signaled that she may not receive legal protection against a potential investigation into recent violent protests in Bangladesh.
As a result, Sheikh Hasina is now exploring alternative options, including the United Arab Emirates, Belarus, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Finland, according to sources. This information came to light after External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar stated in Parliament that Hasina requested immediate approval to come to India following her consultation with security leaders. The situation remains dynamic with no definitive path forward.
