BJD Ramps Up Protest Against Polavaram Project

The opposition BJD in Odisha has formed a committee to intensify its protest against the Polavaram multipurpose project in Andhra Pradesh. The project, supported by the BJP-led central government, is expected to inundate significant land in Malkangiri district, raising concerns about tribal safety. The Congress and BJP have criticized the BJD for its delayed response.

The opposition BJD in Odisha has set up a dedicated committee to bolster its protest against the Polavaram multipurpose project in neighboring Andhra Pradesh, a venture promoted by the BJP-led central government.

Headed by former minister Atanu S Nayak, the committee includes members Debi Prasad Mishra, Pradeep Majhi, and Bhrugu Baxipatra. Members will visit areas like Motu and Padia in Malkangiri district, which are likely to be affected. According to former MP Pradeep Majhi, the project could submerge around 1,400-1,500 hectares of land, endangering the tribal population.

The Congress criticized the BJD for not addressing the issue during its 24-year rule, urging the party to take definitive action rather than mere visits. On the other hand, the BJP accused the BJD of misleading the public for political gain, arguing that the BJD had ample time to raise concerns with the Centre.
