People's Democratic Party Chief Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday urged India to take lessons from Bangladesh amid growing youth-related issues in Jammu and Kashmir. Mufti emphasized that ignoring a significant youth population, especially in times of inflation and unemployment, can lead to serious consequences, referencing the recent events in Bangladesh.
Mufti noted the importance of proportional reservations for weaker sections and criticized policies that go against the public interest. She warned that continued pressure and exploitation could replicate Bangladesh's situation in Jammu and Kashmir, where youth feel similarly helpless. She referenced the resignation and subsequent escape of Bangladesh's Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina amid widespread protests.
Bangladesh is currently experiencing political turmoil, with President Mohammed Shahabuddin dissolving the parliament following Hasina's resignation. Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has been named head of the interim government. India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar assured that the Indian government remains in close contact with its community in Bangladesh, noting that many students have already returned to India.
