Nobel Peace Prize-winning economist Muhammad Yunus is poised to lead Bangladesh's interim government following weeks of intense student protests that resulted in the resignation and departure of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to India.

Yunus, 84, recommended by the student protesters and a staunch critic of Hasina, will be sworn in as chief adviser on Thursday, accompanied by a team of up to 15 advisers. The discussions on the composition of this interim government continued until late Wednesday, without the participation of Hasina's Awami League party.

In the wake of Hasina's departure, marked by jubilation and violence, Yunus returns from Paris to a nation grappling with economic stumbles and calls for national elections within three months. Both Yunus and the opposition BNP have called for calm and an end to violence.
