Thailand's Progressive Party Rebrands Amidst Controversy

Thailand's main progressive political party, recently disbanded by court order, has regrouped under a new name, the People's Party. The party vows to continue pushing for reforms despite opposition from conservative forces. The dissolution, seen as an attack on Thailand's progressive movement, has drawn international concern.

Just two days after a court order led to its dissolution, Thailand's primary progressive political party has reconstituted itself under the new name, People's Party, and pledged to continue its reformist agenda despite ongoing opposition from conservative factions that prevented it from holding power despite a strong election performance last year.

Leaders from the dissolved Move Forward Party announced the formation of the People's Party during a gathering where they introduced the new party's five executive members, including its leader 37-year-old IT expert Natthaphong Ruengpanyawut.

This development comes as critics label the party's dissolution as the latest in a series of legal moves by conservative elements aiming to stifle the progressive movement. The 2023 general elections saw Move Forward securing the most parliamentary seats, yet their prime ministerial candidate was blocked by conservative, military-appointed Senators. Lawmakers not banned from politics have 60 days to join another party to retain their parliamentary seats.
