Gaurav Gogoi, Congress leader, claimed discontent among Assam BJP workers over Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. This follows former BJP MLA Ashok Sarma's defection to Congress. Gaurav Gogoi, Congress leader, has alleged growing discontent among BJP workers in Assam regarding the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The statement came after former BJP MLA Ashok Sarma and his supporters joined the Congress in Nalbari.
Gogoi, the Congress deputy leader in the Lok Sabha, noted that just as his constituents in Jorhat had defended their self-respect in the general elections, the people of Nalbari would similarly teach the BJP a lesson in the upcoming 2026 assembly elections. He emphasized that many within the Assam BJP are unhappy with how Sarma is managing party affairs.
Sarma resigned from the BJP on August 2, citing dissatisfaction with party leadership and the way he was treated by allies of the Chief Minister. Having served as an MLA from 2016 to 2021, Sarma switched to the RSS but grew discontent after being denied a ticket in the 2021 elections, which was instead given to former Congress leader Jayanta Malla Baruah, now a minister in the Assam government.
