Ecuador President Daniel Noboa Confirmed for Reelection Bid

Ecuador's National Democratic Action political movement has officially confirmed President Daniel Noboa as its candidate for the upcoming presidential election scheduled for February. The confirmation provides Noboa an opportunity to secure his first full four-year term in office.

Noboa, 36, originally won the presidency in 2023 to complete a shortened 18-month term after predecessor Guillermo Lasso called for early elections to avoid impeachment. Known for his commitment to tackling Ecuador's crime wave, largely attributed to drug trafficking gangs, Noboa has implemented a series of stringent security measures.

In January, Noboa declared a state of war and labeled 22 groups as terrorists. His administration has enacted states of emergency allowing military patrols in streets and prisons and garnered voter support for measures like stricter gun controls and eliminating parole for severe crimes. These efforts resulted in a 19% decline in violent deaths through July 2024.
