NCP (SP) president Sharad Pawar on Sunday criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi's assurance to double farmers' income, stating that the BJP regime has instead witnessed a doubling of farmer suicides.
Speaking at a rally in Barshi town, Maharashtra, Pawar claimed farmers are not receiving adequate prices for their produce and have become indebted. ''The prime minister promised to double the income of farmers, but instead, farmer suicides have doubled,'' he stated.
Pawar emphasized the importance of changing the current government to one that protects farmers, youth, and women. He noted that BJP governments have failed to alleviate farmers' hardships and create jobs. ''We must change the government,'' he urged. Pawar also pointed out BJP's inability to win 300 seats in the recent elections without alliances. He argued for reducing farmers' debt by waiving loans, mentioning his own actions as a former agriculture minister.
