Maldivian Democratic Party Applauds Recalibration of Maldives-India Relations
The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has praised the current government's recalibration of its India policy, hoping the shift will be consistent. The MDP also called for a public apology from the Muizzu government for prior anti-India sentiments. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar's visit reinforces the Maldives-India relationship.
The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has expressed strong approval of President Mohammad Muizzu's government recalibrating its stance towards India. This shift comes amid heightened sensitivities following earlier anti-India sentiments fostered by the administration.
MDP President Abdulla Shahid met with Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, emphasizing that the Maldives has historically seen India as its first responder. Shahid called for a public apology from the Muizzu administration for previous unflattering remarks aimed at India, which he claims have damaged the country's international standing.
Despite the initial tension, President Muizzu stated that his administration hadn't altered its foreign policy but continues to prioritize Maldives' interests. India's recent visit, including the signing of several key MoUs, suggests a reset in bilateral ties.
