Tanzanian Opposition Leaders Arrested Ahead of Youth Meeting
Tanzania police arrested senior CHADEMA leaders, including Chairman Freeman Mbowe and Youth Wing Leader John Pambalu, ahead of a planned youth meeting. This comes despite President Samia Suluhu Hassan's recent relaxation of political restrictions. The arrests have drawn criticism from opposition parties and rights groups.
Tanzanian police have arrested key leaders of the main opposition party CHADEMA, including its Chairman Freeman Mbowe and youth wing leader John Pambalu. The arrests occurred at a regional airport in the southwest as the party prepared for a significant meeting.
Earlier, Vice Chairman Tundu Lissu and Secretary General John Mnyika were detained. Despite President Samia Suluhu Hassan's efforts to relax political restrictions, the opposition claims she continues to undermine their activities, drawing criticism from various groups. The arrests followed a police ban on a youth conference, citing potential disturbances.
CHADEMA denied any plans for unrest, insisting that the meeting aimed to celebrate International Youth Day. Spokesperson John Mrema highlighted that over 400 party supporters were detained. The party is demanding the release of all arrested individuals.
