In a surprising move, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida announced on Wednesday that he will not be running in the upcoming party leadership vote in September, paving the way for a new prime minister to take the helm.

Kishida, who became the president of the governing Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and subsequently prime minister in 2021, has seen his support ratings plunge below 20% amidst corruption scandals. His decision to step down is partly geared towards restoring public trust and demonstrating a revitalized LDP.

With the LDP's control of both houses of parliament, the new party leader will also become the new prime minister. Kishida's tenure was marked by significant initiatives including nuclear energy policies, military enhancements, and strengthening ties with South Korea, despite facing intense criticism and weakening local election results.
