Amid ongoing protests over the RG Kar rape-murder case, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday demanded that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) expedite its efforts and ensure the hanging of the guilty by Sunday, August 18. She also urged that the entire probe be completed by the same date. "Within Sunday (18th August), CBI has to facilitate the hanging of the guilty and complete the entire probe. Our Kolkata Police has completed 90 percent of the investigation," CM Banerjee asserted.

Advocating for capital punishment for the rapist, Banerjee announced a series of protest events to be held from August 17 to 19. "On 17th August, there will be a protest march in all the blocks demanding the punishment of the criminal. On 18th August, there will be a demonstration in all the blocks, and on 19th August, on the day of Raksha Bandhan, a programme to demand the capital punishment of the guilty will be marked," she declared.

The incident, which occurred on August 9, has sparked widespread outrage and led to protests within and beyond the medical community. Union Minister and West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar criticized the silence from TMC's women MPs, suggesting something is amiss given the gravity of the case. He further alleged the involvement of a TMC MP's nephew in related illicit activities.

Meanwhile, West Bengal Governor CV Anand Bose described the rape and murder of the trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital as a "horrible tragedy," and stressed the need for the state government to maintain law and order. Bose highlighted past atrocities against women and called for unified action to address the issue.

In a strong show of solidarity, doctors nationwide continue to protest the murder and alleged sexual assault of the post-graduate trainee, demanding justice. Demonstrations occurred in Kolkata, Guwahati, Hyderabad, and Mumbai on Wednesday. Protesters held placards with slogans such as "Justice needs to be served," "No duty without security," and "Justice delayed is Justice denied."

CBI and Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) teams have reached RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata to investigate the case, following the Calcutta High Court's direction. The alleged accused, Sanjoy Roy, has been brought to the CGO Complex in Kolkata by West Bengal Police.

The OPD services of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital remained closed on Wednesday as junior doctors protested, while the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) continues its nationwide shutdown of OPD services over the incident. The post-graduate trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. The victim's family alleges she was raped and murdered.
