In a strategic move, the Congress on Wednesday named Abhishek Manu Singhvi as its candidate for the imminent Rajya Sabha bypoll in Telangana. This vacancy arose following the resignation of K Keshava Rao, who left the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) to join Congress and was appointed as an advisor to the Telangana government.
Given the Congress's majority in Telangana, Singhvi is anticipated to secure a win. This bypoll is part of the elections to 12 Rajya Sabha seats across nine states, scheduled for September 3. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge confirmed Singhvi's candidacy in a formal statement.
Following the announcement, Singhvi expressed his gratitude to the senior leadership of Congress, including President Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi, for their trust and confidence in him. It's noteworthy that Singhvi had previously lost a Rajya Sabha election in Himachal Pradesh to BJP's Harsh Mahajan.
