Dipu Moni, a former foreign and social welfare minister under the ousted Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina's governance, was arrested on Monday for attacking the home of a senior BNP leader. Authorities reported that Moni allegedly participated in an incident involving vandalism, looting, and arson at the residence of Sheikh Farid Ahmed Manik.
Mohammad Rabiul Hossain Bhuiyan, joint commissioner of the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, confirmed the arrest, stating that Moni has been taken to the DB office for further procedures. An official, who requested anonymity, mentioned that she might face further charges.
The allegations against Moni date back to an attack that took place on July 18. A legal complaint, filed on August 15 by A Razzak Hawlader of Chandpur Municipal Jubo Dal, accuses armed individuals of vandalizing, looting, and setting fire to Manik's house. The incident adds to the turbulent political climate in Bangladesh, marked by violence and mass protests.
