US intelligence officials confirmed on Monday that Iran was responsible for the cyber attack on Donald Trump's presidential campaign. This marks the first instance of the US government attributing such a breach directly to Tehran.
The FBI and other federal agencies reported that Iran viewed the current presidential election as highly significant and aimed to interfere through hacking and other activities. Their goal, according to a joint statement, was to stoke discord and undermine confidence in America's democratic institutions.
More specifically, the Iranian hackers targeted individuals with direct access to both presidential campaigns. The FBI has been investigating attempts to gain access to Democrat Kamala Harris' campaign as well.
