Chancellor Scholz Vows Tougher Deportation Policy Amid Rising Tensions

In a poignant visit to Solingen, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz vowed to intensify deportations following a deadly stabbing incident linked to Islamic State. Scholz's commitment came as the far-right opposition capitalized on the tragedy to criticize his government's handling of migration.

"We will have to do everything we can to ensure that those who cannot and are not allowed to stay in Germany are repatriated and deported," Scholz stated, laying a flower at the crime scene. The attack, perpetrated by a suspected Islamic State member from Syria, killed three and injured eight, and has heightened political tensions over asylum regulations.

The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has leveraged the incident in its election strategy, calling for stricter migration controls. Scholz, facing political pressure as state elections loom, reiterated his October 2023 pledge to ramp up deportations. Authorities had unsuccessfully attempted to deport the suspect last year under EU asylum rules.
