The Congress-led United Opposition Forum in Assam has lodged an FIR against Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma following his controversial 'Miya Muslim' remarks. The FIR, filed on Wednesday at Dispur Police Station in Guwahati, accuses the Chief Minister of promoting enmity between different groups based on religion and race.
A delegation led by Assam Pradesh Congress Committee President Bhupen Kumar Borah and Assam Jatiya Parishad President Lurinjyoti Gogoi lodged the complaint. Borah alleged that Sarma has been inciting communal violence through provocative speeches and demanded his dismissal and arrest.
During a press conference, Borah criticized Sarma for his divisive comments and accused him of focusing on his personal interests under the guise of representing Assam's people. The opposition has also accused BJP leader Mayur Borgohain of physically assaulting laborers, adding to the allegations of a conspiracy to incite unrest in the state.
Earlier in the state assembly, Sarma doubled down on his remarks, declaring he wouldn't let Assam become 'a land of Miyas'. Opposition parties labeled his comments as partisan, further fueling the ongoing political strife. AIUDF MLA Mujibur Rahman affirmed his party's commitment to fighting for Miya Muslim rights, condemning both Congress and BJP for communal politics.
The situation has escalated following the alleged gang rape of a minor girl in Nagaon district, leading to arrests and further tension in the state.
