Iran Increases Uranium Stockpile Amid Rising Tensions

Iran has increased its uranium stockpile enriched to near weapons-grade levels, according to a UN watchdog report. As of August 17, Tehran possesses 164.7 kilograms of uranium enriched up to 60%, defying global demands. The IAEA continues to face challenges monitoring Iran’s nuclear activities.

In a defiant move against international demands, Iran has significantly increased its stockpile of uranium enriched to near weapons-grade levels. This revelation comes from a confidential report by the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), disclosed on Thursday.

According to the IAEA report, Iran possessed 164.7 kilograms (363.1 pounds) of uranium enriched up to 60% as of August 17, marking an increase of 22.6 kilograms (49.8 pounds) since the agency’s last assessment in May. Uranium enriched to 60% purity is alarmingly close to the 90% level required for weapons-grade material.

The IAEA report also indicated that Tehran has not reconsidered its decision to ban top nuclear inspectors and has maintained disruptions to surveillance cameras monitoring its nuclear program. Despite Iran's acknowledgment of pending discussions with the IAEA, no talks have occurred since the election of President Masoud Pezeshkian. Moreover, unresolved questions remain regarding man-made uranium particles at undeclared sites. This report surfaces just days after Iran's supreme leader expressed willingness for renewed negotiations with the U.S., underlining the complex situation.
