Trump Opposes Florida Abortion Amendment
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump announced he would vote against a Florida amendment to protect abortion rights and reverse a current six-week ban. This contrasts his earlier ambiguous stance. The amendment is key in the upcoming election against Democratic opponent Kamala Harris.
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump stated on Friday that he will vote against a Florida amendment designed to enshrine abortion rights in the state’s constitution and overturn a current six-week abortion ban.
Trump's comments were made during an interview with Fox News, following a confusing signal he gave earlier in an NBC News interview suggesting potential support for the amendment. The proposal is strongly opposed by anti-abortion groups supporting his November 5 election campaign against Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris.
Trump remarked, 'I think six weeks, you need more time than six weeks,' indicating that the proposed amendment is too lenient for his stance. 'So I'll be voting no for that reason,' he added.
Vice President Kamala Harris, citing Trump's pride in his role in overturning constitutional abortion protections, highlighted the extremity of the six-week ban, which affects women often before they realize their pregnancy. 'When I’m president and Congress passes a bill to restore reproductive freedom, I will proudly sign it into law. The choice in this election is clear,' Harris declared.
Abortion rights have emerged as a pivotal issue in the election, with Trump asserting the decision should now rest with individual states.
