Republican States Sue to Block Latest Biden Student Debt Forgiveness Plan
Seven Republican-led states have filed a lawsuit challenging President Joe Biden's latest student debt forgiveness plan. The lawsuit, presented in federal court, aims to halt the cancellation of $73 billion in loans, arguing that the Education Department lacks the authority. This follows a previous Supreme Court ruling blocking a different relief plan.
Seven Republican-led states have filed a lawsuit to challenge President Joe Biden's latest student debt forgiveness plan. The lawsuit contends that the U.S. Department of Education is moving too quickly to start canceling loans, potentially eliminating $73 billion overnight.
Filed in federal court in Brunswick, Georgia, the suit argues that the Education Department lacks the authority to forgive such debts without congressional approval. This legal action follows the Supreme Court's recent decision to block a previous debt relief attempt by the Biden administration.
An Education Department spokesperson noted that the department will continue to fight for borrowers, stressing that $169 billion in debt relief has been approved for 4.8 million individuals so far. This is the latest legal hurdle in President Biden's effort to bring student debt relief to millions of Americans.
