EU Envoy Calls for Decisive Kosovo-Serbia Normalization Talks

EU envoy Miroslav Lajcak urges Kosovo and Serbia to intensify efforts towards normalization talks crucial for EU membership. The meeting in Pristina with Kosovo's Deputy PM focused on stalled discussions, with concerns about rising tensions and recent violent incidents. The EU's envoy to the Western Balkans, Miroslav Lajcak, urged Kosovo and Serbia on Friday to intensify their efforts in normalization talks, stating that these discussions are decisive for their path to EU membership.

Lajcak visited Kosovo's capital, Pristina, to meet with Deputy Prime Minister Besnik Bislimi, who handles the EU-facilitated dialogues on Kosovo's behalf. Notably, Lajcak is not scheduled to visit Belgrade this time, breaking from his usual routine.

The EU and the U.S. are urging both nations to honor the agreements reached by their leaders, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti, last year. Lajcak emphasized the legally binding nature of these agreements and highlighted the negative impact of inflammatory statements from both sides. Tensions persist after a deadly clash in September and recent unilateral actions by Kosovo, prompting increased NATO peacekeeper presence at the border and warnings from international powers.
