Innocence Imprisoned: A Mother's Fight for Justice

Bleider Leves, a 17-year-old mechanic from Caracas, Venezuela, became a victim of police brutality and wrongful imprisonment in late July following the country's disputed election. According to his mother, Adelaida Herrera, officers beat, tortured, and jailed him without cause.

Despite nearly two months in detention, Bleider remains imprisoned with no charges filed against him. Rights groups reported 25 deaths and 2,400 arrests tied to the government's post-election crackdown. Herrera has repeatedly appealed to authorities for his release but has received no response.

The national communications ministry and attorney general's office declined to comment on Bleider's case. The July 28 election results, which declared President Nicolas Maduro victorious, have been contested by the opposition and alleged as fraudulent by Western governments. Herrera's ongoing struggle highlights the dire human rights situation in Venezuela.
