Controversy Over Nominated MLAs in Jammu & Kashmir Assembly

Jammu and Kashmir Congress president Tariq Hameed Karra has openly criticised the decision to allow the Lieutenant Governor to nominate five additional MLAs to the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly. He expressed concerns that these nominations would favor the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), though he does not foresee any hurdles in government formation.

Karra emphasized that the nomination of these MLAs is both unconstitutional and undemocratic. The party has initiated action against the move, though Karra is confident that this will not impact the alliance's ability to form a government. The Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha, is scheduled to nominate five members to join the 90 elected Assembly members.

In the election aftermath, the Congress congratulated the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) leader Farooq Abdullah for securing 42 seats. The NC-Congress pre-poll alliance has collectively won 48 seats, readying them to form the government. Omar Abdullah is poised to become the Chief Minister, subject to an internal discussion within the JKNC.

Omar Abdullah, appreciative of his father's trust, highlighted that the final decision rests with the party legislators and the alliance's consensus. He stressed the importance of adhering to proper procedures as the party prepares to govern post-Article 370 abrogation elections.

The recent elections marked a significant moment in Jammu and Kashmir, as the first held post the abrogation of Article 370. The National Conference emerged with 42 seats, Congress with six, while other parties secured varied results. BJP, despite gaining a significant vote share, did not impact the alliance's potential to govern.
