Train services across Punjab were disrupted as farmers took to the rail tracks in a three-hour 'Rail Roko' protest on Wednesday. The demonstration aimed to pressure the central government into accepting demands, including a legally enforceable Minimum Support Price (MSP) for agricultural produce.
Organized by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, the protest saw farmers blocking routes at many locations, such as Moga, Faridkot, Gurdaspur, Jalandhar, and Ludhiana, among others. Key trains, including the Humsafar Express, Dadar Express, and Shan-e-Punjab Express, were halted at Ludhiana and Khanna railway stations.
The farmers are demanding a legal MSP guarantee, debt waivers, pensions for farm workers, and non-increase of electricity tariffs. The protests have been ongoing since February 13, with escalating actions like fast-unto-death and failed entries into Delhi. They are also seeking compensation for victims of past agrarian protests.
