Unexpected Release: American Teacher Marc Fogel Freed by Russia
American teacher Marc Fogel has been released by Russia and is headed to the White House. Fogel, detained since 2021 over drug charges, was freed after a visit by U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff. The move comes as part of efforts to improve U.S.-Russia relations amidst the Ukraine conflict.
In a surprising turn of events, Russia released American schoolteacher Marc Fogel, following an unanticipated visit by U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff to Moscow. Fogel, held since August 2021 on drug smuggling charges, was freed as President Donald Trump attempts to mend ties with Moscow to help end the Ukraine conflict.
President Trump announced that Fogel is expected at the White House upon his return to the United States. His family, celebrating the news, will reunite with him Tuesday night. A photo showing Fogel aboard the flight home, enjoying a meal with his U.S. passport, was shared by Trump’s chief hostage envoy, Adam Boehler.
When questioned about the exchange terms, Trump claimed that the U.S. gave 'not much,' characterizing Fogel's release as a goodwill gesture from Russia. The development follows Fogel's 14-year sentence for carrying medically prescribed marijuana, legal in Pennsylvania, with Trump hopeful this paves a path to ending the Ukraine crisis.
