Abhijit Mukherjee, son of the former Indian President Pranab Mukherjee, has rejoined the Congress party after leaving it four years ago for the Trinamool Congress. The announcement was made at the Congress's state headquarters, where Mukherjee was welcomed back with the party flag by senior leaders.

Expressing enthusiasm, Mukherjee termed his return as a 'second birthday' in Congress politics. He indicated his desire to rejoin the Congress in June last year, but procedural delays due to state elections postponed his homecoming until now.

Abhijit first won a national election as a Congress candidate in 2012 from Jangipur Lok Sabha constituency, a seat previously held by his father. His re-entry into Congress is perceived as a strategic move to bolster the party in West Bengal.
