Extortion Shockwaves: Threats Rock English Bazar Municipality

Authorities in West Bengal's Malda district arrested one individual and detained four others in connection to an extortion threat targeting senior TMC leader Krishnendu Narayan Chowdhury, the chairman of English Bazar Municipality.

The accused, Sahdat Sheikh, allegedly tried to extort Rs 20 lakh from Chowdhury by impersonating a member of the notorious 'D Company.' Police tracked Sheikh's mobile to confirm his involvement, while four associates, including a resident of Bihar, were also questioned.

This incident marks a growing trend of threats against TMC leaders, following the murder of English Bazar's TMC councillor Dulal Sarkar in January, and a recent attempt on TMC MLA Sabitri Mitra's life. Such events have heightened political tensions in the region.
