In a rare move, President Donald Trump's envoy Adam Boehler recently engaged in direct talks with the Palestinian militant group Hamas concerning the release of hostages held in Gaza. This development was characterized as a "one-off situation" by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Monday.
Rubio explained that Boehler, tasked with securing the release of hostages, had a unique opportunity to negotiate directly with individuals in control of the captives. Despite the effort, Rubio acknowledged that "as of now, it hasn't borne fruit," speaking to reporters during his flight to Saudi Arabia.
While applauding the attempt, Rubio emphasized that the primary channel for negotiation will continue to be through President Trump's special envoy for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff. Witkoff's diplomatic efforts are primarily being advanced through Qatar, promising ongoing dialogue on the delicate situation.
