Singapore Poised for Early Elections as Boundaries Redrawn

Singapore has announced a revision of its electoral boundaries, signaling a potential early general election. The Elections Department made the announcement on Tuesday, setting the stage for Prime Minister Lawrence Wong's first electoral test since he succeeded Lee Hsien Loong as leader of the People's Action Party in May 2024.

The move follows population shifts and is keenly observed as past elections have traditionally occurred soon after such reports. Historically, the People's Action Party has maintained dominance, but the upcoming elections will test its popularity following a dip in voter support in the 2020 polls.

The recent adjustments include the creation of more single-member constituencies, potentially reducing the scale of losses for the ruling party to one seat per constituency. The ruling party will contest in 97 seats across new single-member and existing multi-member divisions, with the government accepting these changes last week.
