Trinamool Congress candidate Alifa Ahmed achieved a significant victory in the Kaliganj Assembly by-election, defeating her closest BJP rival Ashish Ghosh by a 50,049 vote margin, as per the Election Commission of India. Her triumph in Nadia district underscores her party's continued influence in the region.
Although receiving fewer votes than her late father, Nasiruddin Ahmed, who won the seat in 2021, Alifa surpassed his winning margin, benefiting from a more even distribution of votes among her competitors. Voter turnout, however, was lower compared to the previous full election cycle.
Alifa, an ex-IT professional, attributes her win to the electorate's confidence in Mamata Banerjee's leadership, vehemently denying claims of communal voting patterns. Meanwhile, the BJP and Congress have drawn contrasting interpretations of the result, with BJP emphasizing their success in Hindu-dominated areas.
