In a significant diplomatic push, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has called for escalating pressure on Russia, advocating for more robust support for Ukraine to secure a 'just and lasting peace.' Speaking in Tokyo, Wadephul underscored the importance of security guarantees for Ukraine's defense.

His remarks come as U.S. President Donald Trump is set to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and other key European leaders, including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, following a dialogue with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. This gathering is anticipated to shape the geopolitical dynamics concerning Ukraine.

European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, convened on Sunday to strengthen Zelenskiy's position ahead of the pivotal discussions at the White House. They emphasized Ukraine's necessity to be part of any territorial negotiations and advocated for protection of its remaining territory.
