Delhi's Pollution Politics: Diwali or Diversion?

Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa has accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) of unjustly implicating Diwali celebrations and Hindu traditions in the rising pollution levels of the capital. In an ANI interview, Sirsa decried AAP's stance as a politically motivated attempt to discredit Hindu practices, emphasizing that the party seeks to satisfy a specific electoral base by calling for a ban on firecrackers and other customs associated with the festival.

Presenting comparative data, Sirsa argued that Diwali's contribution to pollution is considerably less than suggested. He cited figures from the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) and the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), highlighting that although there was a slight increase in air pollution post-Diwali, the levels during this year were lower than in previous years. Sirsa challenged claims that firecrackers are the primary culprits, pointing out that air quality rose significantly even during years when firecrackers were prohibited, thus shifting the blame to other factors like stubble burning in neighboring areas.

The minister criticized AAP for using the pollution narrative to attack the festival as part of a divisive strategy. He labeled these claims as dishonest and contrasted them with systemic pollution issues largely ignored by the opposition. Sirsa also refuted allegations of data manipulation, asserting that air quality measurements are publicly accessible. He reiterated that the narrative linking Diwali with heightened pollution amounts to a campaign against cultural traditions, which he deemed misleading and communalized.
