In a pointed address, CPI (M) Rajya Sabha member John Brittas voiced his alarm over the hasty passage of bills in Parliament, raising questions on the declining quality of legislative discussions. During his remarks on the first day of the new Chairman C P Radhakrishnan's tenure, Brittas emphasized the need for inclusive debates and urged for the representation of diverse political ideologies.
Brittas highlighted a concerning trend between 2019 and 2024, where a significant percentage of bills were rubber-stamped in under two hours. He insisted on the importance of accountability, stressing that the executive must answer to the legislature. The new Chairman has a 'bounded duty' to restore the dwindling standards of parliamentary discourse, Brittas argued.
Several other MPs echoed Brittas's concerns, calling for fairness in parliamentary proceedings and emphasizing the need for the opposition's voice. Discussions also touched on issues surrounding the representation of smaller parties and women members, as diverse voices in the Rajya Sabha sought commitment to upholding democratic traditions and ensuring robust, inclusive discourse.
