Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor labeled the Rashtrapati Bhawan banquet for Russian President Vladimir Putin as warm and engaging. Tharoor enjoyed conversations with delegates, including those from Russia. His participation, however, wasn't without controversy.
The banquet, hosted by President Droupadi Murmu, commemorated the 25th anniversary of the India-Russia strategic partnership. Murmu praised Putin's dedication to strengthening the nations' ties. Despite this, opposition leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi were not invited, drawing political reactions.
Congress media head, Pawan Khera, criticized the government for breaching protocols. He questioned Tharoor's acceptance of the invitation, suggesting a lack of adherence to democratic principles and party loyalty. Tharoor defended himself, recalling when top-external affairs officials were routinely invited to such events.
