On Thursday, the tenure of a parliamentary committee examining pivotal bills related to simultaneous elections was extended by the Lok Sabha.

Committee Chairman P P Chaudhary proposed the motion, seeking to prolong the tenure of the Joint Committee on the Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill, 2024, and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024. This extension will last until the first day of the last week of the 2026 Budget session.

The Lok Sabha agreed to the motion through a voice vote. Since its formation last December, the committee has consulted various constitutional experts, economists, and the Law Commission Chairman Dinesh Maheshwari, among others.
