The BJP's Tamil Nadu chief, Nainar Nagenthran, has criticized the ruling DMK for what he perceives as their selective acceptance of judiciary rulings. He stated that this behavior undermines democracy, especially as the state government challenges judicial authority to appease minority groups.
The criticism follows an impeachment motion against Justice G R Swaminathan of the Madras High Court Bench. The motion came after Swaminathan allowed the lighting of a lamp atop a Madurai hill during the Karthigai Deepam festival. Nagenthran argues this indicates the DMK's focus on minority appeasement over public peace.
Nagenthran voiced his concerns about the ongoing tension between the judiciary and state administration, stressing that court rulings need to be respected to maintain democratic principles. He highlighted that over 107 MPs have demanded Justice Swaminathan's removal, insisting this sets a dangerous precedent.
