On Saturday, Gurpreet Singh Sekhon, a former gangster turned politician, celebrated his release from Nabha jail as a 'victory of democracy'. The Punjab and Haryana High Court ordered his release after his mother filed a habeas corpus plea, claiming his illegal detention by the Ferozepur police.
Sekhon was apprehended as a 'preventive measure', which he criticized as politically motivated. He accused an AAP MLA of misleading the government due to political insecurity. Sekhon expressed gratitude towards the Akali Dal leadership, supporters, and his legal team for their steadfast support and efforts.
With elections in Punjab nearing, Sekhon suggested his arrest was part of a political strategy by the ruling party, apprehensive of losing ground. The judiciary's intervention exposed alleged power misuse, leading to his conditional release. Two of his family members are contesting in upcoming elections with support from the Shiromani Akali Dal.
