A voter turnout of 19% was observed by noon during the zila parishad and panchayat samiti elections in Punjab on Sunday. Voting started at 8 a.m., with security measures in place, and will continue until 4 p.m., as vote counting is set for December 17.
The elections aim to fill positions in 347 zones of 22 zila parishads and 2,838 zones of 153 panchayat samitis. Approximately 1.36 crore voters are eligible, with over 9,000 candidates contesting. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann urged voters to participate actively.
Controversy marred the polls, with allegations of a booth capture in Muktsar and a brawl between party workers in Tarn Taran. Polling was suspended in certain areas due to ballot errors, and SAD raised concerns about a potential breach of conduct in Fatehgarh Sahib.
