The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) is contemplating an independent run in the upcoming Mumbai civic polls, scheduled for January 15, amid tension with its coalition partners. Despite being part of the ruling Mahayuti alliance, the BJP has declared it will not join forces with the NCP as long as Nawab Malik, a controversial figure, heads the election management committee.

Sana Malik, an MLA and daughter of Nawab Malik, emphasized that the decision will ultimately rest with Ajit Pawar, NCP president and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister. She stated the party is prepared to go solo in the election, but also holds the option of allying with Mahayuti partners, should circumstances change.

The BJP's opposition to Nawab Malik stems from allegations of money laundering and alleged connections with underworld figures, including Dawood Ibrahim. This political tension has prompted the NCP to consider alternative strategies, evident in the meeting between NCP leader Shivajirao Nalawde and BJP minister Ashish Shelar, conducted without party authorization.
