The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has secured a sweeping victory in the Punjab zila parishad and panchayat samiti elections, according to the preliminary results announced on Thursday. As the counting of ballot papers continues, AAP is leading in most zones, confirming its stronghold in the state's rural landscape.
The elections, held on December 14, were conducted for 347 zones of 22 zila parishads, and 2,838 zones of 153 panchayat samitis. Among the declared results, AAP has claimed victory in 201 of the 317 zones in zila parishads. The Congress follows with 60 zones, Shiromani Akali Dal with 39, BJP with 4, BSP with 3, and Independents 10.
Amidst accusations of electoral coercion by opposition parties, AAP leaders, including Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, have dismissed such claims, asserting that the elections were conducted fairly. Kejriwal highlighted the party's success as evidence of popular support for its rural policies.
