Assam's Extensive Electoral Roll Overhaul Awaits Election Commission Nod

The Assam government is poised for a comprehensive update to its electoral rolls, pending the approval of a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) by the Election Commission of India (ECI). This was confirmed by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma during a press event in Sonari.

As of now, Assam is undergoing a Special Revision (SR) of its electoral rolls. "The SIR will be very extensive and properly done," Sarma expressed, advocating for an immediate revision despite the ongoing SR due to the delayed notification of the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

Notably, the SR recorded a 1.35% increase in the number of electors, up from the previous count in January 2025. Prospective deletions and additions continue to emerge during the current claims period, with the final rolls expected on February 10, 2026.
