In a sharp political exchange, Congress MP Jairam Ramesh targeted the Indian government after US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced a temporary allowance for India to import Russian oil. Ramesh accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of being 'cowardly and compromised,' suggesting India's compliance with US directives on oil purchases.
This development follows Bessent's acknowledgment that India halted buying sanctioned Russian oil as per US requests and planned a switch to American oil supplies. However, due to global supply chain disruptions, a 30-day exemption was granted to India to mitigate oil shortages.
Despite opposition criticism, India maintains confidence in its energy security. With 40% of oil imports reliant on West Asian routes, officials highlight proactive adjustments and ample reserves ensuring energy stability for consumers, amid ongoing regional tensions following recent US-Iran conflicts.
