Siddaramaiah Defends Karnataka's Budget Amid BJP Criticism

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has defended the state's budget against BJP assertions that it's debt-driven and biased. Presenting a budget of Rs 4.48 lakh crore, Siddaramaiah emphasized fiscal discipline, noting inclusive development and comparing the state's debt to the Union's, maintaining fiscal responsibility within legal boundaries.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has robustly defended the state’s budget following criticisms from the BJP, refuting claims that it is overly indebted and favors select groups. The budget, with an outlay of Rs 4.48 lakh crore, was presented with a focus on fiscal discipline.

Speaking to reporters, Siddaramaiah, who also serves as the state's finance minister, argued that development necessitates borrowing, provided it adheres to fiscal norms. He highlighted that the state debt is 24.94% of GDP, within legal limits, unlike the Union's greater debt figures.

Further addressing inclusivity concerns, Siddaramaiah insisted the budget promotes equitable progress, serving minorities and disadvantaged communities. He attributed financial impacts in part to GST changes and the removal of MGNREGA, vowing to continue presenting budgets if allowed by party leaders.
