The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) chief, Thol Thirumavalavan, has escalated calls for a comprehensive investigation into the death of Akash Denison, a Dalit youth who perished under police custody in Tamil Nadu's Sivaganga district. Thirumavalavan accused the police of subjecting Akash to caste-based abuses and physical assault prior to his demise.
Denison, who was reportedly involved in a minor assault case, allegedly detailed police brutality and insults to his family before his death. Critics, including Thirumavalavan, have questioned why Denison died while purportedly receiving treatment at a hospital. They demand transparency and accountability from the Tamil Nadu authorities.
The victim's father, Kannan, alleged severe physical abuse during police interrogation, including the use of caste slurs. As calls grow for accountability, the family demands that charges be filed under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The incident also spotlighted criticisms of populist measures endorsed by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam's Vijay.
