Kerala Gears Up for Record Voter Turnout in Upcoming Assembly Polls

Kerala's Chief Electoral Officer Ratan U Kelkar announced on Friday an ambitious plan to set a new record for voter turnout in the upcoming assembly elections. The goal is to surpass the previous turnout high of 80.5% from the 1987 polls, targeting over 85% participation this year.
In his address at a one-day training session for District Election Officers, Kelkar outlined several strategies to make polling more inviting, referring to the event as a 'festival of democracy.' He emphasized the creation of model polling booths focusing on inclusivity and environmental responsibility, which will offer facilities like wheelchair access and refreshments.
The electoral roll update nears completion with over 15 lakh applications processed following a Special Intensive Revision. Kelkar stressed that the Model Code of Conduct will activate post-election date announcement with meetings scheduled to ensure political parties' compliance. The overarching aim is for Kerala's elections to be recognized globally as a 'gold-standard' electoral exercise.
