In a surprising political maneuver, Sebastien Delogu, a hard-left candidate in Marseille's mayoral race, has withdrawn his candidacy ahead of the second round of voting. The move aims to prevent the far-right National Rally (RN) from gaining control of France's second-largest city.
Delogu's exit follows his first-round performance where he captured nearly 12% of the vote, trailing the two leading candidates, Socialist incumbent Benoit Payan and RN's Franck Allisio. His decision has transformed the race into a three-way battle involving Payan, Allisio, and conservative contender Martine Vassal.
The withdrawal emphasizes the political strategy unfolding across France, as other cities face similar negotiations to counter the growing influence of the RN, particularly in urban centers grappling with security issues like Marseille.
