Maharashtra minister Shambhuraj Desai has accused the BJP of exerting undue political pressure during the Satara Zilla Parishad elections, leading to alleged voting irregularities. Desai, a Shiv Sena leader, claimed that the incident 'murdered democracy' and tarnished Satara's reputation as a 'cultured district'.
In response to these allegations, Desai announced that the Shiv Sena would pursue legal action against those who violated the party's directives, with the potential for disqualification proceedings under the anti-defection law. During the elections, BJP's Priya Shinde won the post of president, surpassing the Shiv Sena-NCP candidate despite their majority.
The issue has raised significant tension within the Mahayuti government coalition, comprising the BJP, Shiv Sena led by Eknath Shinde, and the NCP. Maharashtra legislative council deputy chairperson Neelam Gorhe has directed the suspension of Satara SP Tushar Doshi, given the disorder and alleged manhandling during the election process.
