Myanmar's Presidential Election: A Military Influence

Myanmar's parliament is set for a vote to elect a president, with ex-military chief Min Aung Hlaing as a candidate. Myanmar's political landscape is poised for a significant shift as its parliament prepares to elect a new president. House Speaker Aung Lin Dwe announced that the bicameral vote will take place on Friday, featuring former military chief Min Aung Hlaing as a notable contender.

Min Aung Hlaing, the 69-year-old general who orchestrated the 2021 coup that ousted Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi's government, recently stepped down as the top military commander. On the same day, he was nominated for the vice presidency, alongside two other candidates from the upper house and military representatives.

A joint legislative session will decide the next president among these candidates. The election follows a controversial military-backed vote deemed a 'sham' by global observers.
