Kunal Ghosh, the Trinamool Congress candidate for the Beleghata Assembly constituency, is no stranger to controversy, with nine criminal cases pending against him. A key case involves money laundering connected to the notorious Saradha ponzi scam, according to his affidavit submitted for the election.
With only Rs 21,000 cash on hand and movable assets valued at Rs 1.72 crore, Ghosh's financial disclosures raise questions. Despite the legal hurdles, Ghosh asserts he has not been convicted in these pending cases, although he did face arrest in November 2013 for nearly three years.
A former Rajya Sabha MP and professional journalist, Ghosh has a conviction for attempted suicide during his custody in 2014, under section 309 of the IPC, though no punishment was pursued. His affidavit also reveals he possesses no immovable assets.
